Our First Day in AK

We made it! We’re in Alaska!

We arrived LATE last night and met Kevin in the airport, and then drove to Calypso Farm, where our small little village awaited: tents, a yurt, and an outdoor kitchen. We warmed up with some hot soup, met Tom, co-owner of the farm and our main host for these few days, set ourselves up in our tents, and went to sleep in the gloaming light.

We slept in and had a full, full day—starting, of course, with a hearty breakfast. After scarfing eggs, veggies, berries, and fruit, we dove into our group orientation, laying out program expectations and agreeing on our own standards and values we want to abide by this trip as a group and as a community—set in stone in what we have dubbed our “Meese Manifesto” (yes, we know that meese is not the plural of  moose).

Then we went on a walk in the boreal forest with Tom, who introduced us to the many micro-climates on the farm and some new terms: squirrel middens and discontinuous permafrost, to name a couple.

The many varied faces in reaction to sampling the local flora: spruce tips.

We grabbed some fresh produce from the farm, worked together to prep our meal, and had a feast of a dinner.

Bounty.
Prep work.
Prep, prep, preparation is the name of the game!
